Vitamins are organic compounds that are essential for the proper functioning of the body and the maintenance of health.They do not provide energy or building material, but are necessary for many important biochemical processes taking place in the body.Only a few vitamins are synthesised in the human body: A, D and K, as well as some of the B group, usually in insufficient quantities (largely dependent on the state of the intestinal microbiota). Therefore, they must be supplied with food and it can happen that meals contain too little of them. This has a significant impact on the health and function of the entire organism.
Long-term deficiencies of vitamins in the diet result in conditions known as avitaminosis, whereas a dietary intake of too little vitamins in relation to the body’s needs is known as hypovitaminosis.
