Vitamin A (retinol) – is involved in the synthesis of proteins, fats and hormones of the thyroid and adrenal cortex. It is necessary for the normal growth and functioning of the organ of vision , especially for the normal function of the retina, the maintenance of the good condition of the mucous membranes and the nerve sheaths.
The provitamin of vitamin A, β-carotene, belongs to the group of antioxidants (protects the organism against free radicals) and prevents the formation of certain cancers (colon, prostate, breast and lung). A reduction in its absorption is observed in alcoholics, drug addicts and smokers.
Vitamin A deficiency is caused by a lack of vitamin A in the diet or by impaired absorption and lower bioavailability.
